Prom flower etiquette in Oklahoma City: what to give, when to order

Corsage, boutonniere, both? When to order in OKC. How to match the dress. The two questions every parent asks.

Prom season runs March through May in OKC, with most schools clustered in late April. Here's what to know if you're trying to get this right.

The basics, in one paragraph

The traditional setup: he brings her a wrist corsage matched to her dress, she brings him a boutonniere (lapel pin) matched to his suit or his date's dress. Plenty of couples mix this up now — two corsages, two boutonnieres, gender-neutral wrist florals. There's no wrong answer. The point is that you both have something pretty pinned to you in the photos.

What to order

  • Wrist corsage — $25–$45 in OKC. Worn on the left wrist usually. Stretch elastic or ribbon band.
  • Boutonniere — $12–$22. Pinned to the left lapel.
  • Pin-on corsage — same idea as wrist but pinned to the dress. Less common today; check that the dress can take a pin.

When to order

Order at least 7 days out. We can do shorter — sometimes 3 days — but you want first pick of stems, especially the ranunculus, garden roses, and unusual greenery that prom couples love.

The week of prom, every florist in OKC is at capacity. Don't be the parent calling at 4pm on a Friday.

Matching the dress

Send us a photo of the dress (or the swatch). We'll pick stems that complement, not match. A blush dress doesn't need pink flowers — white roses with a peach ribbon often look better in photos than a literal color match.

If you're worried about color, white and cream is the safe play. Photographs beautifully against any dress, never clashes.

The two questions parents always ask

"Will it last all night?" Yes if we condition it right. Refrigerate before the dance, take it out 30 minutes before pickup. Wrist corsages hold easily through a five-hour event.

"What if she doesn't want to wear it?" Then she gets a small bouquet to carry instead. Tell us when you order — we'll build it that way.
